Your Annual Safety Check: Resilience in Action

You wouldn’t dream of driving your car year after year without a safety check. Daily commutes, long road trips, sitting idle in the driveway, exposure to the elements—all take their toll. A simple annual inspection not only prevents breakdowns, it also provides peace of mind. You know your vehicle is roadworthy, reliable, and safe to get you from A to B.

But let me ask you this: When was the last time you gave yourself the same level of care?

As executives, educators, and professionals, we carry heavy loads, deadlines, responsibilities, and the constant demand to perform. Resilience isn’t about pushing through no matter what; it’s about making sure the system, your system, is fit for purpose. That’s why I believe every one of us, regardless of age, gender or fitness level, needs an Annual Safety Check (ASC) for our health and wellbeing.

Think of it as preventative maintenance for the most valuable machine you own, your body. A thorough medical check doesn’t just give you a snapshot of where you are now, it helps prepare you for what’s ahead. If something needs attention, you gain awareness and can act on it. For example, if cholesterol levels are creeping up, small shifts in diet and exercise may be enough to turn things around, sometimes without the need for medication. Awareness gives you choice, and choice builds resilience.

How to Run Your Annual Safety Check

Step 1: Book an appointment with your GP.

Make it non-negotiable.

Step 2: Ask for a comprehensive assessment, including:

  • Eyes and ears check

  • Heart and lung function

  • Resting blood pressure

  • Mobility and stability across joints and spine

  • Blood tests covering:

    1. Blood fats

    2. HDL/LDL cholesterol

    3. Liver function

    4. C-Reactive protein (inflammation marker—insist if not offered)

    5. White and red blood cell count

    6. Electrolyte balance

    7. Thyroid function

Step 3: Complete your blood work at a local pathology provider.

Step 4: Review the results with your GP and map out next steps.

The Payoff

By completing your ASC, you’ll gain clarity, confidence, and peace of mind. You’ll know exactly how your body is performing, and if anything needs attention, you’ll catch it early. It’s a modest investment with extraordinary returns: your health, your resilience, and your ability to keep showing up, for yourself, your team, and those who rely on you.

Because real resilience isn’t about waiting until the crisis hits. It’s about building strength, adaptability, and endurance long before the road gets rough.

Stay strong, stay prepared, and take care of the most valuable asset you have: you.
